Mr. Valluvar, who was Tweeting Wits, 1000s Of Years ago! January 13, 2021 – Posted in: Blog

Thiruvalluvar, also popularly known as Valluvar, was a Tamil poet.  Unlike other poets, he is a poet of all times.  He belongs to the 3rd Sangam period in the history of Tamil literature, somewhere between Third Century and Second Century AD.  But there are scholars who put him in the 7th or 8th Century AD.

THE SOCIAL HISTORY OF THIRUVALLUVAR

Talking about his personal life, a lot of stories were written, but they do not have any historical or biographical basis. These stories have come up just to establish the greatness of Valluvar. With regard to his greatness, there is a separate set of poems written by different poets called “Thiruvalluvar Malai”.  This has a unique place in Tamil literature. No other author in the entire body of Tamil literature has such a pre-eminent place to have a separate set of poems on a book and its author. Getting back to his life and times, we can safely say that whatever he has portrayed echoed the time in which he lived. Because the basic principle of literature is that it is a mirror that reflects life.  If we adopt this rule, then Kural gives us glimpses of life and history of his time.

Any common person could understand all the 1330 Kurals in 133 Chapters.  The Tamil language used by Valluvar is amazingly chaste, and its style down-to-earth.  In Tamil literature, if you take any great literary work, it is not addressed to any individual and it is always addressed to the world – beyond the boundaries of region, religion and language. In the Thirukkural, the first Kural itself is addressed to the world.

DID YOU KNOW ?

It is said that the Former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam carried his copy of Thirukural with him wherever he went.  In many of Dr. Kalam’s speeches one can find interesting verses from Thirukkural quoted by him.

RELEVANCE OF THIRUKKURAL IN EVERYDAYLIFE

THIRUKKURAL is regarded as one of the most practical and relevant scripture although written over 2000 years ago.  It is very simple and can be understood by all without requiring any comments.  It is very short and sweet with only seven words in 2 lines.  It is more like the modern haiku and allows us to relate it to our life for all situations.  One can see the answers for all critical life oriented situations scattered all over it.  We can share the relevance of Thirukkural and can find a way out from the perils we face today.  As Bharathidasan says in one of his songs, one can ask their children to recite one Thirukkural to come out of the confusion they are facing.

THIRUVALLUVAR DAY -THE DIVINE POET’S BIRTH ANNIVERSARY.

A temple-like memorial to Thiruvalluvar, Valluvar Kottam, was built in Chennai in 1976.  This monument complex consists of structures usually found in Dravidian temples, including a temple car carved from three blocks of granite, and a shallow, rectangular pond.

There is a 133-foot tall statue of Thiruvalluvar erected at Kanyakumari at the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Indian Ocean converge. There is also a statue of Thiruvalluvar outside the School of Oriental and African Studies in Russell Square, London.

THE SAINT WHO SPEAKS ACROSS TIME

The Tamil classic, Thirukkural, has been translated into many major languages of the world. Attributed to Thiruvalluvar, who probably lived during the 2nd or 3rd century A.D., the Kural occupies a leading place amongst the wisdom literatures of the world.  The popularity of the Kural amongst all ancient Tamil literatures can be judged from the fact that the next most translated work in Tamil comes nowhere near the Kural when compared to the number of times and number of languages the Kural has been translated.

The Tamils believe that the Kural has been translated into most languages, next only to the Bible and the Quran.  As of 2020, the work has been translated into about 41 world languages.

The first translation of the Thirukkural in a European language was done in Latin by Constanzo Beschi, a Jesuit missionary in 1730.

In fact, few realize that Thirukkural may have had a big influence on how India got her freedom from Britain in 1947.  It is believed that the legendary writer leo tolstoy was deeply inspired by the concept of non -violence  found in thirukkural when he read the german translation of the book.  This was in turn passed to mahatma gandhi through a letter to Hindu, dubbed the “ Father Of Indian struggle of Independence” sought Tolstoy’s guidance.

PALM LEAVES KURAL PENDANT

Palm leaf is the paper of the ancient world.  Manuscripts made out of dried palm leaves were served as the paper of the ancient world in parts of Asia as far back as the fifteenth century BC. The significance of this is that the greatness of a work is realized on the basis of not the weight of its manuscript but the divine qualities of the work which forced the plank to stay afloat.

Original Thirukkural manuscripts have not survived – they could not, for they would have been written on palm-leafs (Panai Olai) and palm-leafs, if well maintained, might last for a maximum of 300 years!  The original one would have been copied and used extensively, so it would have survived only for about 200 years!  This would have periodically transferred the contents to new palm-leafs and handed them over generations – in this process the scripts would have changed in line with the current scripts in use.

THIRUKKURAL COUPLE RINGS

The section on virtue of love, explains morality based relationships of love.  If the married life is filled with love and moral values, the life would become disciplined and the purpose of life would be attained.  Thiruvalluvar has put forth regulations for the relationship of love and relationship of man and woman.  He has categorised stealth and chastity and detailed the way of attaining humanitarian characteristics as regulations for a good life.

When words of affirmation is your love language, words build you up.  Learning to speak your partner’s preferred language can drastically strengthen your relationship.  Strengthen your love with the quotes of thirukkural engraved on the gold couple rings because it is impossible to measure or count just  portray my love, just feel it.
